In the light of rising levels of pollution and green house gases, it’s nothing but moral duty to take steps towards increasing the green cover and check pollutant emission.

At this district of Rajasthan, all dwellers have decided to abandon firecrackers this Diwali. The Raisinghnagar district residents will plant trees and observe a green Diwali this year. They have also decided to screen films for spreading awareness and invoking righteous feelings amongst the people.

Who was the pushing force?

This is not the first time plantation drive to be conducted in this village.This time, it’s bigger and better as they have decided to shun firecrackers and play a green diwali. According to up- sarpanch of the gram panchayat Richa Sharma, people were motivated and pushed by Jyani ji (aka Shyam Sunder Jyani).

Jyani, a village native is a teacher at the government college in Bikaner. Impressively, she is the crusader of various plantation drives which have led to plantation of lakhs of trees across the region.

How Could Kids shun firecrackers?

As the kids were unwilling to give up firecrackers, the village officials lured kids towards movie watching. Kids were equally excited to watch movies in villages. Hence, when given an option, children immediately agreed to shun crackers for movies. Children will get an opportunity to watch three short Hindi-dubbed films namely Carbon, History of the World in Two Hours, and a half-hour talk by Al Gore, the former US presidential candidate, on climate change.

“We want to sensitise families about trees. If we keep the women at forefront, the kids in the families will be easily sensitised and the coming generation will share a great bond with trees,” says Jyani.
