The Bundi district of Rajasthan witnessed a critical death of a patient due to Japanese encephalitis (JE) in October. In a preventive mode to avoid such instances future, seven hospitals have been equipped with JE testing facilities. The centre has aided state hospitals to equip this facility, which was earlier available at limited government hospitals.

The Centre has not only equipped hospitals with the JE facility but also Elisa kit for the effective diagnosis of Japanese encephalitis across the state.

The bigger problem is that not many cases of JE are reported in the state. The recent incident of a 30-year old woman resident of Bundi dying out of JE brought the disease to everyone’s notice. The state health authorities took the matter into cognizance and reported it to JE.

The process of installing JE testing facilities was made a hassle-free process by the ministry of health which was aided by National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP).

As per NVBDCP report, until November 19, 223 persons have lost their lives. As per the report, it is also clear that Rajasthan rarely reports JE cases.

“The Centre has sent 21 kits for diagnoses of JE for medical colleges in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Ajmer, Jhalawar, Bikaner and for the principal medical officer in Bundi, where the case of JE was reported,” said a senior health department official.

“JE diagnostic test facilities available for entire state,” the source added.

Special measures are being taken to reduce the vector density. Personal protection measures are also being adopted to check the spread of this disease. The use of insecticide-treated mosquito net is also being promoted.

At this point, Bundi and Kota are being considered as areas which are more prone to JE. Hence, the authorities asked them to conduct frequent inspections in the area to check the spread of this disease in this area.
