How Jaisalmer Railway Station Became the Most Profitable Revenue Generator for the Country…

Till date, the Indian Railways have earned up to 24% revenue—all thanks to modernized infrastructure and better transport facilities. Having earned Rs. 154.4 crores in the first half itself, the NWR has set a strategic roadmap for next 10 years using which, they can generate up to 37% revenues on goods transportation.

Railway authorities mainly carry iron, coal, iron ore, cement, steel, food grains, fertilizers, petroleum products and other metallic/non-metal items in containers. Lately, special coaches were added for transporting raw, organic materials, as well. The authorities plan to expand their transportation capacity to generate hefty profits in the coming years.

    • As of now, Jaisalmer Railway Station earns maximum profits on limestone transportation. As per records maintained by NWR CPRO Tarun Jain, this year, north western railways transported approximately 1107.1 million ton goods (as opposed to 1104.2 million tons last year). Jaisalmer station contributed maximum share in this category—18.68 lakh tons limestone worth Rs 552 crores.
    • Besides limestone, the railway coaches carried up to 48.3 million tons of iron steel, 137.2 million tons of iron ore, 21 million tons of raw materials for metallurgical plans and spare parts/ other goods up to 79.9 million tons. Thus, the railways back iron processing industries in India.
    • The Coal India Ltd., one of the biggest customers of Indian railways transports around 222 rakes per day to various energy producing units in the country. Last year, around 212.8 rakes transported via trains were used for construction and manufacturing purposes. Until March 2017, the railways have transported 253.6 rakes per day—the highest record till date.

Keeping these targets in their mind, NWT authorities will make positive amendments in online rail management, recordkeeping, goods transportation, terminal management and utilization of railway resources to achieve better results. The authorities are hopeful their efforts will show colors in the upcoming financial year.
