This initiative is launched under ‘Modified Weather Based Crop Insurance scheme.’ Here, the compensation will be paid to the famers for fruits and vegetables. Under this scheme, the compensation will be given on the basis of fluctuations in weather. Hence, the quantum of weather fluctuations from normal temperature would decide the quantum of compensation to the farmers of fruit or vegetable.

To get the weather details, the Meteorological department had already set up weather monitoring stations. These stations are situated in almost all districts for daily reporting of weather.
Reason for starting of this insurance scheme
The inclusion of fruits and vegetable farmers under the cover of a crop insurance scheme has been done on the demand of farmers and agricultural organizations said Agriculture minister Prabhulal Saini. At present, only cereals and grains are covered under crop insurance scheme.
Challenges to be faced by government
The data for other agriculture crops like cereals and grains is available with department. As per officials, it is big challenge to get sufficient empirical data for fruits and vegetables.
Fruits and Vegetables to be insured
In this scheme, various fruits and vegetables will be covered. These are orange, tomato, mango, brinjal, bottle gourd, cucumber, pomegranate, Indian gooseberry (amla), kinnow, lemon, ladies finger, bitter gourd and Indian round gourd (tinda) etc.
It is known that many farmers commit suicide if their crops get damaged. This new initiative of government for farmers will definitely be a great help for them. The scheme will give them more security to recover losses.
