Barmer Refinery: The most modern refinery of India is inaugurated

Rajasthan is leading on the path of continuous development. Every now and then, it is coming with new achievements.  In the list of achievements, Barmer refinery is the latest addition. Now, after almost 4 years, the project would be started. Today, the most awaited project is inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 16 January, 2018. Barmer Refinery is considered to be the most modern refineries of the country. Barmer refinery is India’s first greenfield Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) petrochemical project. For this project, Rs43,129 crore investment has been proposed. The project will take four years to complete. This is a 9 MMTPA (million metric tonnes per annum) refinery. This refinery is a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the state government. This refinery has 74% stake of HPCL while 26% of Rajasthan government. The project will be completed by 2022-23.

How is this refinery beneficial?

In 2016-17, India imported 214 million tonnes (MT) of crude oil. India has aimed to become a regional refining hub. Barmer fields account for around a quarter of India’s crude oil production. From this refinery, almost 1.75 lac barrel oil will be produced every day. This new refinery will help in meeting the growing demand of petroleum products. In fact, with this refinery oil production for 30 years will be carried out.
