From February 2018, Singapore will not allow any growth in its car population. Singapore is densely populated nation on the planet with an extensive public transport system. As per the estimates, the population in Singapore has reached about 5.6 million. It has increased by 40% since year 2000. The splurging of cars on roads is a big problem. Singapore government counted more than 600,000 private as well as rental cars on roads last year. “In view of land constraints and competing needs, there is limited scope for further expansion of the road network,” said The Land Transport Authority (LTA).
To control the vehicle population, Singapore has decided the annual growth rate through a system of bidding for the right to own and use a vehicle for a limited number of years. As per new rules the permissible vehicle growth rate will come down to 0 per cent from the current 0.25 per cent per annum for cars and motorcycles. This is asserted by The Land Transport Authority (LTA). This rate will be reviewed in 2020.
