Names can be weird at times. But who knew people would name themselves after mobile phones’ name like Gionee, Samsung, etc. To top it off, a person has accorded himself as the president and named himself ‘Rashtrapati’. If you are mulling over this, let me further add that in Bundi district of Rajasthan, keeping unconventional names like these is normal.
Residents of Bundi take pleasure in naming themselves against highly revered posts, mobile phone giants, top political parties and other known faces in the Indian political system.
This is not all, as top mobile phone brand names got booked by a few residents, several others chose names like Sim cards, Missed Call, Chip, Memory card and the alike.
This habit of weird naming is more prevalent in the Ramnagar village, which is about 10 km from the district headquarters and has a population of a little over 500 people from the Kanjar community.
“Several people in the village often engage in illegal activities and frequent police stations and courts. Influenced by the reputation and dignity of officials, they tend to name their children after posts and offices like IG, SP, Hawaldar and Magistrate,” says a government school teacher.
The ironical part is that these people fail to embody their names. They have names of coveted posts but because they are illiterate, they fail to justify their names, is what a few educated people of the village claim.
