BJP has decided to implement a dress code for all students in the Rajasthan government colleges from the academic session 2018-19 onwards. Students in the state’s government colleges will no longer be allowed to enter college premises in casual wear once the rule is executed officially.

The commissionerate college education has sent letters to all the principals of govt colleges them and they have been asked to decide the color of the uniform. The color has to be decided latest by March 12 in discussions with faculty members and student union representatives and submissions have to be made by the authorities.

While boys are likely to get dressed in shirt, trousers, shoes, socks, belt and sweaters (for winters), girls will be wearing salwar suit, dupatta, socks, sandals, and cardigans (for winters). This implies that students in Rajasthan govt colleges will no longer be able to wear clothes of their choice.

The decision has led to mixed reactions and meanwhile both BJP and Congress have stated their differing opinions on the same. On one hand, state higher education department has said that the decision has been taken on students’ demand, Congress is blaming the government of saffronising colleges.

Talking about the views of Congress, the party has accused BJP of pursing RSS agendas. Congress Cheif Whip Govind Singh Dotasara said that the party will protest against this decision. He pointed out that after changing school curriculum and distributing saffron colored bicycles, BJP is further saffronising colleges.

On the contrary, State Higher education Minister Kiran Maheshwari has clarified that it was the demand of the students so as to prevent outsiders from entering colleges. She also said that it’s up to colleges as to what color they choose for the uniform and the government hasn’t imposed any compulsion for saffron color. The decision has been made to provide a unique identity to the students since anyone can enter colleges in a casual attire.

Public Information Officer, College Education department, has revealed that in 200 colleges of Rajasthan, a similar dress code is being decided for around 4 Lakh students. Reportedly, students will no longer be allowed to wear jeans and tee-shirts in these govt colleges.
