Rajasthan bags a Rs 2600 crore deal from JICA; 137 dams, canals to be renovated

    Rajasthan has become a hub of aggressive infrastructural development.  Rajasthan has collaborated with the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) for providing an ornamental sum of Rs 2600 cr.  

    The Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) has given it’s assent to provide aid of a whopping Rs 2600 crore for the restoration of 137 dams and canals spread over 25 districts in the state. The financial aid will also bolster the Bhakra canal system in the state.

    “A sum of Rs 1068 crore will be used in the first phase of strengthening of the Bhakra Canal system. Moreover, the project involves restoration work of 137 dams and canals spread over 25 districts,” Shikhar Agarwal said.

    A memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed between the state government and the JICA on Friday at New Delhi.

    By the time the project will be completed, Rajasthan will have 4.8 lakh hectares of land will be brought under irrigation in 25 districts.

    Shikhar Agarwal tweeted: Tender for these works will be invited in next one month. The project will significantly improve efficiency of irrigation.

    Sources closely involved in the development also said that the main objective of this MoU was to buttress farmers’ livelihood.

    Not only this, this development will also ensure water-use efficiency clubbed with increased agriculture productivity. The existing irrigation facilities and agriculture support services will be upscaled due to the construction of dams and canals.

    Principal secretary Agarwal said the four-year project would benefit farmers in 4.80-lakh hectare irrigated areas across the state.

    Ajmer, Alwar, Sikar, Karauli, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Dholpur, Bharatpur, Baran, Jhalawar, Bundi, Kota, Udaipur, Pratapgarh, Chittorgarh, Banswara, Dungarpur, Bhilwara, Rajsamand, Pali, Sirohi, Dausa, Hanumangarh, Sriganganagar and Jaipur are notable districts and cities which will be entitled to the benefits of this MoU.

    Kenji Hiramatsu, ambassador of Japan to India, Joint secretary in the finance department S Silva Kumar and principal secretary in the state water resources department Shikar Agarwal were among the many dignitaries who were present at the event.
