After a 2-year long speculation on the future Congress President, Rahul Gandhi has finally put a confirmation on the reports by filing nomination for the post at party headquarters today. It’s the last day of filing the nomination and as of now the Gandhi scion is running for the post, unopposed.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi arrived at the party headquarters on Akbar road at 10:30 and filed his nomination papers by 11 am. In addition, there were five sets of nomination forms which were filed by Congress leaders on his behalf. These included CWC members, general secretaries in the party, in-charge of various states, and chief ministers of states ruled by the Party.

Succeeding Mother Sonia Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi has been serving the Congress Party as its Vice President since 2013. Now he is all set to become the president by succeeding his mother Sonia Gandhi as the Chief. Sonia has been handling the post since 1998 and is the only leader to have been working as party president for 19 years now.

Important Dates for Nominations

December 11 is the last date for filing nomination and if needed poll will be carried out on December 16. Later, the counting results will be declared on December 19. However, since nobody else has filed nomination for the post, it’s quite evident that Rahul Gandhi will soon be seen handling Congress as its President.

What People have to say

While other parties are not quite happy with the entire nomination, Congress leaders are showing complete faith that Rahul is competent enough to fulfill his duties as the party President.

The former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh regarded Rahul Gandhi as the “darling of the Congress” and expressed faith in Rahul’s capability of carrying forward the traditions of Congress. On the other hand, PM Narendra Modi pointed out that Congress is not a party but a dynasty and compared Rahul with Aurangzeb.

The Challenges

Although it’s quite unsurprising on behalf of Congress to choose Rahul for the post, the responsibility comes with a heavy baggage of challenges for the scion. To start with, as Congress is going through a rough patch, the very first challenge is to retain the reputation and also revive its image as well as the faith of the public in the party.

Besides, considering the ongoing elections and the polls in the future, the party has to make sure to register a victory in 8 states before 2019. Also, not to forget the task to win 2019 elections is undoubtedly a crucial one.
