The Public Works Department will bring in a One-time notification which will engender construction of urban roads.

The existing and proposed sections of the highways which are passing along populated areas will be the targeted locations.

This area will be prone to the after-effects of the SC rule banning alcohol shops on Highways.

Nonetheless, the chief engineer of PWD said that this notification has no inter-linking effect with the SC liquor ban along highways.

As a matter of fact, Rajasthan has already denotified particular sections of State highways passing through populous towns.

All liquor vends within 500 metres of national and State highways have been notified by the Supreme Court order.

“When a bypass is constructed, the old section [of the highway], which passes through the city and town become left-out stretches. Since there cannot be two highways of the same number at the same location, the left-out sections come under the local body and lose the status of highway,” Mr. Shivlahri Sharma said.

If reports are to be believed, nearly 450 liquor shops have been stationed in and around the highway stretches.

“The status of State highway has been relinquished only for those stretches that are passing through the limits of local bodies and are connected through a bypass,” he said.

The officer said the same provision exists for national highways as well. “This process has no connection with liquor shops,” he added.

As per the State Excise Department, about 2,800 shops are stationed on national and State highways.

The Supreme Court in its order dated March 31 stated that liquor vends within 500 metres of national and State highways will shun it’s operations starting April 1.

Recently, the court reduced the distance from 500 meters to 220 meters in municipal areas having population less than 20,000.
