    Nurse Lini, who worked at Perambara Taluk Hospital, also kept her family away from her even during the last time. She did so to keep her family safe from infection.     How does the disease spread?

    Nipah virus or NiV infection is a deadly virus that transmits from animals to human. In fact, this also spreads from human to human. The recent host for this virus are fruit bats. This virus is found in bats’ urine and saliva. It could infect the intermediary i.e. plants or animals and the consumption of these infected plants and animals spread disease in human beings. Even, the pigs are host of this disease.

    Symptoms of Nipah Virus infected

    It typically takes five to 14 days for symptoms of an infection to start to appear. The symptoms are acute breathing trouble, inflammation of the brain, fever, headache, drowsiness, disorientation and delirium. The patient can slip into coma within 48 hours.

    Precautions to be taken

    Don’t come in direct contact with infected bats, pigs, or from other NiV-infected people. But, it is not easy to identify the infected one.

    It is also advised not to eat date or drink raw date palm sap. Even, stay away from the people who are involved in dates farming.

    Avoid consuming mangoes, rambutan, bananas and sapotta or chikoo. It is also advised not to eat fallen fruits.

    Be aware of the symptoms and report to the doctor immediately for early diagnosis and treatment.

    As per WHO, there is no vaccination for the virus which has a mortality rate of 70%.  The only way to fix nipah virus is to have the right care.
