Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Oli arrived in India on Friday and was received by Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. The leader was given a ceremonial reception at the Rashrapati Bhawan earlier this morning followed by which he paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat. Here he also met President Ram Nath Kovind and PM Narendra Modi.
This visit is a crucial one, especially for Nepal as the nation wants to focus on implementing past agreements signed between the two nations. Ahead of the visit, PM Oli had said, “We want to maintain trustful ties with India and clear any suspicions in the bilateral relations.”
- As per the sources, PM Modi also expressed his readiness to revise and update the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the two countries.
- PM Modi said that both the nations have deep ties in Defence and Security as they believe in preventing the misuse of open border.
- PM Modi said that his motto of Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas and PM Oli’s Sammriddh Nepal, Sukhi Nepal compliment each other.
- One of the key highlights of the meetings pertains to the railway network that is going to connect Indian cities with Kathmandu.
- Reportedly India and Nepal will jointly lay the foundation stone of the 900 MW Arun III hydroelectric project. It will be built by the Sutlej Jal Vikas Nigam at the cost of 1.5 Billion Dollars.
- Both the leaders are also going to inaugurate the integrated checkpost at Birgunj-Raxaul, which is the main entry-exit point on the open India-Nepal border.
- Another agreement in the list is concerned with moving the bulk cargo through other transit points like Biratnagar, Bhairahwa, and Nepalgunj.
- At the joint press meeting, PM Oli said that a number of guidelines have been framed in the already signed pacts. He said that Nepal wants more investment from the public sector of India.
