Now, the walled city of Jaipur will get a tunnel. The construction of international standard underpass beneath the Walled City area has taken up by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). The tunnel is proposed between Sanganeri Gate and Jorawar Singh Gate of the walled city. For building this underpass, chief minister Vasundhara Raje made a request to transport minister Nitin Gadkari.

To make detailed project report for tunnel, a consultant has also been appointed. In fact, the NHAI will now invite the tenders to prepare the report.

Why is this international-level underpass being built?

It was mentioned by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje that the international-level underpass would be a significant thing for walled city Jaipur. It will also help in restoring of charm of old city. This would also help in de-congesting traffic as well as reducing the pollution in the Walled City. As Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Sanganeri Gate and Jorawar Singh Gate are one of the crowded areas of the city so this tunnel would help. This would also help the commuters to move easily.

This is not the first time the discussion on this tunnel has been started. Back in November 2016, a pre-feasibility report was submitted by a private consultant agency. This agency was appointed by JMRC.

What was suggested in the report? Jaipur

The report mentioned the construction of a 2.3-km subway between Sanganeri Gate and Jorawar Singh Gate. However, officials assume the length of the tunnels will be increased to 4-km. As per previous report, it was proposed that the subway would be 17 metres beneath.  For entry, Ramniwas Bagh parking would be used while exit should be made near Jal Mahal. Under the project, two additional tunnels will also be constructed for parking.
