Time and again Congress has been referred to as a Muslim Party and with the popularity of BJP amongst Hindus; the tag has become inseparable from the party led by the Gandhi family. Despite several attempts, Congress hasn’t been able to get rid of the “Pro-Muslim” label and now a recent statement by party’s leader Salman Khurshid may further increase problems for Congress. In a recent interview, Salman Khurshid urged Muslims to come forward in support of Congress. He said that since Congress has already been labeled as a “Muslim Party”, all the Muslims from across the country should come together and give support to the party.
Although this could be a new approach of the party to garner support and sympathy votes from Muslims, it could create a lot of trouble in a scenario when Assembly elections are due in states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. Not only Congress has to work towards claiming power in the poll-bound states but it also has to revive its position.

UPA’s Chairperson Sonia Gandhi had earlier admitted that BJP has been able to put the Pro-Muslim label on Congress and the party is fighting hard to get rid of it. Notably, in 2014, when the party was limited to just 44 seats, Congress formed a Committee under the chairmanship of AK Antony. In the report, it was concluded that because of the Muslim party tag, Hindu voters have shifted towards BJP and that’s the main reason behind the electoral loss. Congress Muslim Party
Apparently, BJP has clear majority as it has succeeded in garnering support from Hindus while Congress has just given high positions to Muslim leaders in spite of working in the best interest of the Muslims. Now that the majority of Hindus have already found their ideal choice in BJP and Muslims are also gradually exploring their options, it’s hard to say what Congress will do now!
Possibly, since Congress has not been able to get rid of the pro-Muslim tag, it’s trying to lure Muslim voters because it’s the only party that can challenge BJP in the general elections.
