India is embracing new heights each day. Whether it’s bagging the MissWorld Title or winning maiden category medals at the Olympic. Today too, India has been made proud by its citizen Dalveer Bhandari who has been re-elected to the International Court of Justice as the General Assembly.

70-year old Bhandari received 183-193 votes at the General Assembly. He also secured 15 votes in the Security Council to fill the chair as the ICJ.

    Withdrawal of candidacy by Britain

What’s more interesting is the fact that Justice Bhandari’s force was so much that the Britain candidate Christopher Greenwood had to withdraw his candidacy.

“The current deadlock is unlikely to be broken by further rounds of voting. We have therefore consulted our candidate Sir Christopher Greenwood who has confirmed that his candidate for re-election to the International Court of Justice should be withdrawn,” Rycroft said in his letter which was read out simultaneously in the General Assembly and the Security Council.

“In taking this step, we have borne in mind the close relationship that the United Kingdom and India have always enjoyed and we will continue to enjoy; and the fact that both candidates fulfill the requirements for our elections and have already served the court diligently with impartiality and independence,” Rycroft added.

Upon being re-elected to the prestigious bench, Britain congratulated Justice Dalveer Bhandari. “If the UK could not win in this run-off, then we are pleased that it is a close friend like India that has done so instead. We will continue to cooperate closely with India, here in the United Nations and globally,” said Matthew Rycroft.

What’s amusing is that in the history of 71 years, UK has always had a judge on the bench of ICJ. However, this year ICJ will have no UK judge.

ICJ is a worldwide platform which addresses and settles issues in accordance with the international law. It settles legal disputes and also provides advisory opinions on legal questions.
