The Gujjar agitation in Rajasthan doesn’t seem to end soon even after so many meetings between the community members and the state government. Apparently, the state government is making all possible attempts to find a middle ground in the entire agenda but no final decision has been made as of now. Gujjar Reservation

Through this agitation, the Gujjar community in the state is demanding 5% quota in the already reserved OBC category in government jobs and educational institutions. The Gujjar Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti held a Mahapanchayat of the community in Bharatpur’s Adda Village to discuss the reservation demands.

This Mahapanchayat was held after the meeting between 15-member delegation of Gujjar community and a group of ministers whereby certain issues were discussed pertaining to the demands of the community. The meeting continued till late evening and ministers were also positive about it but somehow the Gujjar community itself remained divided on the next step.

Reportedly, the Gujjar Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti Convenor Kirori Singh Bainsla didn’t attend the meeting with the ministers but later was present in the Mahapanchayat to discuss the key points of the reservation movement. Some reports also suggest that although not all members of the community are in the favour of the agitation, they all are united by the common goal of reservations.

Earlier the community had decided to start the agitation from May 15 but the government immediately acted upon the matter and offered the Gujjars a middle ground to discuss their demands. Later, it was decided that the agitation has been deferred till May 25 and now again another meeting is being held at the Secretariat between the community and the state government.

Although it’s not confirmed whether these meetings will be of any help in concluding the matter, the bigger question here is that whether such reservation movements are an ideal solution to resolve any issue. Gujjar Reservation

It’s important to note that the Gujjar agitation in Rajasthan has been going on since the year 2007 and has claimed 72 lives till date. Not only these movements pose difficulty for the public but also lead to loss of public property. Gujjar Reservation

In all such cases, the government has to be prepared with adequate force to ensure law and order in the state. From suspending internet to imposing Sec 144 in the areas, the government has to deal with a lot which often disturbs the smooth functioning of the system. Taking a look at the past few months, agitation movements have become quite routine in the state which has clearly not benefitted anyone; rather it has created inconvenience and chaos.
