Sunday will not be a working day for petrol pumps in eight states. This will be valid from May 14th, 2017. This move has been taken to conserve the fuel resources. PM Narendra Modi has taken this extensive step towards furl conservation as mentioned by a petrol pump owners.

Suresh Kumar, an executive committee member from the consortium Indian petroleum dealer mentioned, “We had planned to shut our outlets on Sundays a few years back. But oil marketing companies had then requested us to reconsider our decision. Now we have decided to shut the outlets on Sundays”.

This decision has been taken following the Prime Minister’s take in his recent session, “Mann ki baat” programme to save oil for the favour of environment. Kumar, the vice-president of Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers Association mentioned outlets in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Haryana and Maharashtra will be shut for a period of 24 hours on Sunday. In total, there are 20,000 fuel outlets in these areas.

The fuel conservation regime will start from May 14th, 2017.

He also asked, “”In Tamil Nadu, we expect a business loss of Rs 150 crore if we do not operate on a Sunday. But we have been seeing a decline in sales on Sundays by upto 40 per cent”. Also, this is clear that the decision has not been taken after taking consent from OMC and they will be communicated later on about this.

Kumar mentioned that, to cater to the emergency needs, the petrol pump will have one staff member on board to provide the fuel. He mentioned, “That struggle is going on. We are meeting our association members shortly. We will announce our decision soon”.

Also, the association was in discussion regarding this and will make an official announcement regarding this.
