The relationship between forests and humans was formed in the prehistoric times. We may not realize, but this association, based on ecological, productive, cultural and social values is important for the development of human society. To spread this message across the country, the forest department and Tiger Watch (Rajasthan) organized an enlightening workshop—“Ranthambore Gramin Vanya-Jeev Sammelan” for the natives of the desert state. The workshop, based on the World Environment Day 2017 theme—‘Connecting People to Nature’ from the poles to the equator on the land, aims at helping local communities bond with forest wildlife.

Human Evolution Facts: Did you Know that Humans Evolved on Trees?

Neo-positivist legends paint a beautiful picture of prehistoric man hunting in the forest, stocking up their rewards in the caves. However, research on human anatomy reveals a completely different story. The form and function of primate wrist bone suggests that man never evolved from its knuckle-walking ancestor that is gorilla. Rather, seven million years ago, the Home sapiens actually lived and moved around on trees.

Gradually, they descended down to the ground and began walking upright. Mutations in human body made them adapt to the new terrestrial environment. Despite this, it’s impossible to overlook their relation with the trees.

Ranthambore Gramin Vanya Jeev Sammelan Attempts to Strengthen Man-Wildlife Bond

The 10-day workshop at Ranthambore Tiger Reserve (RTR) aims at generating sensitivity and awareness in the local communities. It sheds light on the rich natural heritage of Ranthambore forests and its significant contribution in human development. Through this workshop, the forest officers will—

    • Directly involve natives in forest conservation,
    • Make individuals realize their responsibilities towards the forest being,
    • Highlight the importance of biodiversity conservation for human society.

As per forest officers, total 150 participants from 90 villages around Ranthambore will be apprised about Rajasthan’s natural heritage. Program organizers believe that it would strengthen the network of wildlife volunteers and encourage flow of information among neighboring villages.

Why it is Important to Connect People with Nature?

The acknowledgement of our socio-cultural bonds with the forest is necessary for sustainable development. Forests hold the key to solve socio-economic problems. Urbanization, industrialization and technology have alienated us from nature, thus weakening our connection with the trees.

Though forest values have changed over a period of time, we just can’t deny that the forests largely contribute to economic, social and cultural development, which is why, it’s important to realize their potential. It will help develop a sustainable relationship between modern society and the forests.

How to Participate in this Workshop?

Wildlife volunteers will select five individuals from nearby local communities. A single volunteer will select 5 participants from three different communities. The organizers will hold similar workshops, seminars and meetings at regular intervals for disseminating valuable information about Rajasthan wildlife.
