2G scam verdict:  A Raja, Kanimozhi and all accused acquitted, What will be the next step?

    It is after seven years, all the accused of 2G scam have been acquitted today. Former telecom minister A Raja, DMK leader Kanimozhi and many other popular names were facing scam charges. At special CBI court in Delhi, the verdict has given to acquit Mr. Raja and Ms. Kanimozhi and the other accused of the corruption as well the money laundering charges.

    What was the matter?

    This 2G scam was exposed in year 2010 and said to be the biggest in Independent India. Mr Raja was held for the charges of allocating airwaves and licenses for cellphone networks in exchange for kickbacks. This led to loss of Rs. 1.76 lakh crore for Tamil Nadu. This scam brought to light by India’s auditing agency Comptroller and Auditor General or CAG in a report.

    Previously, the SC cancelled all the licenses issued by A raja on the basis of wrong procedure. But, in today’s verdict, the Supreme Court found that the prosecution failed to prove the charges. Hence, A Raja, Kanimozhi and all others were acquitted.

    Other highlights of the case

    In this case, A Raja said that then Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh had been explained every decision taken by A Raja in allocation airwaves and licenses for cellphone.

    Along with Mr Raja, executives of some of the top telecom companies are named in the case.

    As per the reports of the CBI, it was found that the Rs.200-crore bribe paid by a telecom company to Mr Raja. This amount of bribe was deposited in the account of a Chennai-based television channel which is partly owned by Ms Kanimozhi.

    Opinions after this new verdict in 2G scam

    After the verdict came, there is ripple effect in political arena. There are continuous opinions from Congress leaders stating that there was no scam was vindicated by the court. Even many of the UPA leaders demanded that former CAG Vinod Rai should be apologetic after this decision.

    Former PM Manmohan Singh said the 2G scam was a massive propaganda against the UPA without any proof. “The judgement speaks for itself.”

    In fact, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley reacts to the 2G verdict shared that some parties are treating this verdict as a badge of honour. He further added that investigating agencies and prosecuting agencies will look into the matter for future.
