15,701 posts at various levels in the state police are vacant apart from 30 posts of IPS officers.

Joint secretary in the Rajasthan home department Surendra Maheshwari and IG police headquarters had appeared in the court.

As per the Apex Court’s directions, the Rajasthan home department shall fill 30% of the vacancies by December this year. Next, the 50% vacancies have to be filled by March next year and the residual 20% have to be filled by March 2019.

An effective roadmap has been formulated by the Apex court. The roadmap was presented to the Rajasthan government at the court. This vacancy will serve more purposes than one.

Apart from increasing employment in the state, it will ensure that patrolling staff is adequate to handle crime and civil cases. Police staff ensures tight security in the city and also ensures that criminal activities are thwarted in the state.

The bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar was hearing a case of Manish Kumar Vs the Union of India in which all the state governments have been made party to the petition. The petition alleged that owing to multiple vacancies and no filling, the law and order situation in the state has been affected in the state.

Additional advocate general (AAG) Shiv Mangal Sharma, state representative claimed that the Supreme Court had directed the state government to fill up vacancies in a time bound and a phased manner.

Rajasthan already has tight security and patrolling in place. But the more the better, hence the Apex Court’s decision is as rational as needful. On a larger scale, however, police staff posted across the country can reduce atrocious incidents like rape incidents, eve teasing, theft and bike snatchers amongst other forms of crime.
