On the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the Gram Swaraj Abhiyaan as a dedication to Dr. Ambedkar. In this program, an initiative was made by the government to provide 100% LPG connections to 21,058 villages.
The purpose of Gram Swaraj Abhiyaan is to reach out to the rural population and make them aware of the welfare schemes and other steps taken in public interest.

The campaign started from April 14 and continued till May 5 whereby the effort was to make sure that 100% families in 21,058 villages were benefited by 7 welfare schemes of the government. These include- PM Modi’s Gram Swaraj Abhiyaan
- Ujjawala Yojna: Free LPG connections to BPL households ensuring a cleaner and safer life to women in the villages. PM Modi’s Gram Swaraj Abhiyaan
- Mission Indradhanush: A government health initiative to ensure full immunization of all children in India. PM Modi’s Gram Swaraj Abhiyaan
- Pradhan Mantri Saubhagya Yojna: Free of cost electricity to around 4 Crore households.
- UJALA Scheme: Promotion of efficient lighting and spread awareness about using efficient equipment like LED bulbs that preserve the environment.
- Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojna: Ensuring people have access to financial services like banking, credit, insurance, pension, etc in an affordable manner.
- Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojna: A government-backed life-insurance policy, renewable from year to year, offering coverage for death.
- Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojna: A government-backed accident insurance scheme, coverage for death and disability. PM Modi’s Gram Swaraj Abhiyaan
During these 21 days of the campaign, various teams ventured into the villages and made sure that the people are aware of the social welfare schemes and are benefitted by these programs. PM Modi also posted a series of tweets whereby he mentioned the effective results of the campaign:

During 21 days of Gram Swaraj Abhiyan:
7.53 lakh Ujjwala connections distributed.
5,02,434 households electrified under Saubhagya Yojana.
25.03 lakh LED bulbs distributed across 16,682 villages.
Immunisation of 1,64,398 children and 42,762 women under Mission Indradhanush.

Gram Swaraj Abhiyan was a success due to the active participation of Ministers, MPs, MLAs, representatives of various local bodies, officials of the state governments, topmost officers of the Central government, civil society members and Self Help Groups. I thank them all.
