March 8th is marked as International Women’s Day and we celebrate the economic, political and cultural accomplishments of women all around the world. Rajasthan is no more in the aeon where girls were taken as burden and were not allowed to explore the world. Despite of all the odds, we have some feminine personalities from Rajasthan who managed to break the shackles of stereotypist rituals and shone brighter than the sun:
- Maharani Gayatri Devi:
This elegant princess with a golden heart needs no introduction. Despite of her lavish lifestyle and brisk sense, the Maharani of Jaipur was a lady with bold principles. Some of her statements were quite fresh and emboldened, like one said during India-Pak partition, “No Muslim shall ever leave Jaipur! They are like the hair on my chest”.
- Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje:
Being the first woman chief minister of Rajasthan, CM Vasundhara Raje have won against all odds. Coming from a royal lineage, she has set herself as the epitome of spunk and skilled leadership. Her recent decisions in favour of farmers, proved that, she holds a sensitive sentiment for Rajasthanis.
- Chanda Kochhar:
Born and brought up in Rajasthan, this wonderfully balanced personality is the face of current retail banking facet of India. She is the receiver of Wockhardt Gold Medal for Excellence in Management Studies. Also, who can forget the “open letter from Chanda Kochhar to her daughter“, manifesting her diligence towards her family.
- Gulabo Sapera:
She was the victim of fate but winner in her real life struggles. Born in the Kalbaliya community of Rajasthan, was buried alive just after her birth and saved later. Gulabo rose above all anguishes and as a world famous dancer earned the title of, “gypse dancer from Rajasthan“, in Thierry Robin’s book, “Gulabi Sapera, danseuse gitane du Rajasthan”, which means, “Gulabo sapera, the gypsy dancer from Rajasthan”. Above all, she has also earned the civilian honour of Padma Shri in the year 2016.
- Meera Bai:
The world famous epitome of true devotee, this Rajput princess was an inspired poetess. Her love for Lord Krishna is known to all. The religious song, “girdhar gopala” embedded with Rajasthani dialect is a mellifluous tune sung by Meera Bai.
