Child Marriage rate Drops in Rajasthan by 20% in last 10 Years: Says NCPCR’s Report

    As the progressive result, Rajasthan has recorded a 20% drop in child marriages. National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) reported after a survey in this year. It’s a far-reaching result which shows that the BJP government has done good work towards child protection.

    NCPCR has released the report on Wednesday, based on comparative analysis of data. Commission conducted the National Family Health (NFH) survey on children of 15-19 age groups.  Young Lives India, a research group in collaboration with the NCPCR, has prepared this report.

    According to the report, the analysis clearly indicates a positive trend and gains from the efforts of the state government to prevent child marriages. Chairperson of State Commission for the protection of Child Rights Manan Chaturvedi said, ‘ The awareness campaign, re-admission of girls in schools and other policies and programs initiated by the commission had a positive impact in reducing child marriages in the state.’

    Facts and Causes about Child Marriage in the state

    Report by NCPCR says that the prevalence of girl child marriage is more common in rural areas that the urban areas. Education and wealth index of the households are significantly related to child marriage amongst girls in India.

    • Poorer the household, higher is the chance of girls getting married early.
    • Rajasthan now has 57.3% of married girls from 15-19 years of age as per the NFH survey in 2015-16.
    • In Rajasthan, child marriage in the rural area is 89.4% while in the urban area it is 10.6%.
    • Child marriage in OBC tops with 55% followed by SC at 22% and ST 15% while others are at 7%.

    Although the number of child marriage has improved in the state, still we have a long way to walk. Rajasthan remains on the top as the state with the highest number of child marriages. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje is working for the welfare of girls and children and we can see the results. BJP government has planned various schemes like Rajshree and Bhamashah Yojana to support female and upgrade their position in the society.
